Sustainability
At Balmid we believe in the transition into more sustainable choices in terms of the products we produce, and as a full-service beauty partner we want to do our part helping our customers making the right choices. If you are looking for direction or customization of sustainable options, we have solutions.
We do not own any factories. Instead, we work with carefully selected factories and suppliers scattered throughout the world with whom we have long-term and trusting partnerships. As far as possible, we promote local production, but in cases where this is not possible, we have built up good, open, trusting and long-term relationships with suppliers spread throughout the world. All in order to meet our customers' needs and requirements. Thus, we are members of the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) and we work together with our suppliers on a common code of conduct based on the ILO conventions and the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
To enhance the recycling capacity of the packaging, conscious choices must be made. Such choices are to choose packaging made from recyclable plastics such as PET, rigid PE and rigid PP, choosing mono-materials, and to make active choices regarding the color of packaging, label material and size, water soluble adhesive and ink, etc.
We want to move away from fossil-based plastic and instead focus on bio-based materials from renewable energy sources that can be material recycled. We also recommend using post-consumer recycled (PRC) materials in the production of new materials, reduce consumption by create long-lived products made of as little material as possible, and we choose means of transport that require less fossil energy e.g. boat freight instead of flight, transport with energy-efficient and fossil-free vehicles, higher proportion of renewable fuels to power vehicles, etc.
We ensure that the chemicals used in our products are safe, of good quality and legally permitted. We follow the chemical legislation REACH, Regulation (EC) N° 1223/2009 on cosmetic products and also have our own internal Blacklist of chemicals that are not permitted in our products because they present health or environmental hazards.
We work actively with organizations that promote the ecosystem such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®-C116992), and we use FSC®-certified wood and paper as much as possible. We also advocate using an effective environmental management system to manage the environmental responsibilities, not only are we Balmid ISO 14001 certified but we also encourage our business partners to be.
